Büyüdüğümüz Ev (‘i geride bırakmak) ⎮(Leaving)The House Where we Grew Up

Büyüdüğümüz Ev (‘i geride bırakmak)

19.11 – 17.12.2022 Mainetti Köşkü, Bornova

Çocukluğumuzun geçtiği odaya geri dönüp uykuya dalsaydık neler açığa çıkardı? Büyüdüğümüz Ev (‘i geride bırakmak) başlığını taşıyan sergi, uyuma, rüya görme ve bilinçdışına ulaşma hâlleri üzerinden kendimiz ve içine doğduğumuz dünya hakkında bildiklerimiz ve henüz karşılaşmadıklarımız için buluşma alanı yaratma amacı taşıyor. Gözde Mimiko Türkkan, Deniz Gül, Monica Papi, Volkan Aslan ve Tolga Balcı’nın çalışmalarını bir araya getiren sergi “derinliklerine in, bat”* cümlesini dinleyici kulaklara öteye varma gayesiyle fısıldıyor. SAHA Derneği’nin bağımsız sanat inisiyatiflerinin sürdürülebilirliğine yönelik fonu ve BAYETAV Sanat’ın mekân desteğiyle gerçekleşen sergi, Bornova’da yer alan Mainetti Köşkü’nün odalarına yayılıyor.

Büyüdüğümüz Ev (‘i geride bırakmak), zamanın doğrusal olmadığı bir düzende hikâyeyi sıraya sokan algımızın ulaşabileceği derinlikleri merak eder.

Suyun hikâyesi izleyiciyi bilincin derinliklerini sorgulamaya iter.

Büyüdüğümüz Ev (‘i geride bırakmak), rüzgâra karşı yürümek yerine onunla birlikte yol almayı tecrübe etme yolunda derin gece yarısının söyleyeceklerine duyuları açmayı öğütler.

(Leaving) The House Where We Grew Up

19.11 – 17.12.2022 Mainetti Mansion, Bornova

What would it reveal if we went back to the room where we spent our childhood and fell asleep? The exhibition titled (Leaving) The House Where We Grew Up aims to create a meeting space for what we know about ourselves and the world we were born into, and what we have not yet encountered, through the states of sleeping, dreaming and reaching the unconscious. The exhibition, which brings together the works of Gözde Mimiko Türkkan, Deniz Gül, Monica Papi, Volkan Aslan and Tolga Balcı, whispers the sentence “go deep, sink”* to the listeners’ ears with the aim of reaching beyond. The exhibition, realized with the support of SAHA Association’s fund for the sustainability of independent art initiatives and BAYETAV Art’s spatial support, extends to the rooms of Mainetti Mansion in Bornova.

(Leaving) The House Where We Grew Up wonders about the depths our perception can reach, lining up the story in a non-linear order of time. To grasp this, it uses the metaphor of the house**, which Mircea Eliade defines as the image of the universe. The house we leave is the record of the world we have left behind. However, the recorded data may not be visible in daylight. At this point, the unconscious and dreams, which are the first to come to mind to go down into these depths, come into play. In one of his seminars on children’s dreams, C. G. Jung asked the participants to force their memories to recall the first dream they had in their lives.*** Early childhood dreams, which come from places of personality far from eye level, are of great importance according to Jung. Tolga Balcı’s sound installation The Facade Poplar is shaped through the voice recordings of the artist’s own son. Elvan’s imaginary friends and utopian places express what the sleeping midnight could say. When the things are taken out of their containers, which they never had and accepted as boundaries, the way things are connected to each other becomes clear. Balcı, who replaces the records he does not have of his own childhood with the dreams of his son, whom he describes as the person closest to him, meets himself on the night when hiding is not an option.

In her work titled Innergy / Watery Incantations, Gözde Mimiko Türkkan traces the fairy tales told just before falling asleep. The extraordinary character of this tale is the water. The story of the water pushes the viewer to question the depths of consciousness. In Türkkan’s narrative, water is the carrier of ancient knowledge. The civilizations that sank and disappeared, those that continue their journey from existence to the present day, and everything that is not yet visible with their concrete existence are inside the water. In one of Jung’s dream analyses, there is a character who perceives the sea as the unconscious and the waves that hit the shore as a flow from the unconscious to consciousness. This person says that those who try to swim in the waves will be dragged, while those who dive into the water can easily move forward.**** In one of his dreams, the same person fears that the waves will take the ground under his feet, while in another dream he leaves himself among the waves. Our self, which is a very small part of the ocean, is changeable and in a constant state of flux, just like the ocean. But, just like water knows itself, can we simply know ourselves when we surrender to the flow?

The time frame of Deniz Gül’s video work titled Stardust belongs to the sunset. In this work, as an excavator comes and lifts the soil from where it is, there is a man standing still right in front of it. Is it possible to watch among the dust what is happening, consenting to losing the angle of sight and come into contact with the sky while rooting on the ground? Or does it mean to be indifference to let everything fall apart? Stardust arises from the oblivion side of the order in which houses, sometimes people are destroyed and new lifestyles are built, and the city, which is exposed to more and more destruction every day. The gold-colored dust spreading around resembles the floating in space of pieces that a once-stellar body spreads out as it dies and of the dust of other dead stars that share a common fate with it. Stars die in different ways from each other. Some stars leave behind a white dwarf as they die. Some merge with other pieces of stars and turn into other formations. The life of some ends by collapsing into itself, which sometimes creates black holes. While Stephen Hawking explains in his book Black Holes and Baby Universes that the things that come out of a black hole continue to date in virtual time, the detail that should not be overlooked is that what comes out of a black hole will always be different from what falls into it.***** Can witnessing the depths of life, letting oneself be lost there, be the precondition for the decision about what remains with oneself and beyond oneself?

Jung’s dreams guided him as he forced himself to choose between the two main characters that he had. While describing the in-between situation, he assumed the first of his personalities as holding the light and the other as following him like a shadow.****** Jung, who met the mana personality after years of trying to get rid of the shadow character’s melancholy, questioned the way the meaning came into existence. “People grow as well, like plants; some in the light, some in the shade. Many need shadows, not the light.”******* He came to the conclusion in the following years that the images and thoughts that frightened him at first were parts of the collective unconscious. Jung’s uneasiness in the years of his first encounter with the unconscious is reminiscent of the story of the Child with the Mirror in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, which is of great importance in shaping his way of thinking. At a time when Zarathustra retreated to solitude in his cave distancing himself from people, he woke up in fear from his dream in the darkness just before sunrise. He asked his heart why he was so afraid, though he just saw a child holding a mirror in his hand in his dream.******** Monica Papi produces a performative video work, Anapnoi, in reply to Gerhard Rühm’s Breath Poetry. In this work, in which Papi defines the activations of breathing by disabling the concept of emptiness, there is a character who walks around with his mirror in his hand. In addition to reflecting images, this mirror also casts shadows on the ground it encounters, accompanied by the sun from the sky. Just as the reflected and the shadow are not identical, what is taken in and what is let out with a breath is different. However, when one goes down to the depths, there is only one channel that spreads the contrasts around.

There are various ways in which rebirth is possible in the variable order where the flow is constant. One of the ways of the new-birth that finds its place in Jung’s four archetypes is “to be reborn in the process of individual life time.”********* This type of birth occurs through the transformation of the person. Jung thinks that such a transformation will take place when a person enters a cave or darkness. The sinking of Zarathustra took place at the end of such a decade. When Zarathustra, aspiring to the sun, decided to sink into the depths, he left his solitude on the mountain and set out to reach people. The old man he met in the forest saw him differently this time than he did ten years ago. “Then, you carried your ashes to the mountains: now, you carry your fire to the valleys? Zarathustra changed, Zarathustra became a child, Zarathustra awakened: what are you looking for now beside the sleepers?”********** Volkan Aslan’s videos “Lovebirds” and “Serenity” also center on the metaphor of fire and are the last works in the exhibition. The fact that the porcelain figuriens in the video burn calmly but do not disappear is reminiscent of the spirits that stand resiliently in the face of magical fire and provide the prerequisite for enlightenment. “The sun of the depths shines” in this place, where the depths and the surface intertwine so that new life can take place.***********

When the black sun that rises into the night when those below and above sea level enter the field of vision, washes the darkness with darkness, those that are there reveal what fire will transform, wind will bring, the earth hides, the depth of the sea and what spirit has to say. (Leaving) The House Where We Grew Up advises to open the senses to what deep midnight has to say on the way of experiencing a journey with the wind instead of walking against it.

Aktığı Yerden Büyüyen ⎮What grows where it flows

Aktığı yerden büyüyen / What grows where it flows

Liliya Lifanova – Cevdet Erek

01/10 – 05/11/2022

What grows where it flows

Liliya Lifanova – Cevdet Erek

01/10 – 05/11/2022
Çanakkale – Mekor Hayim Synagogue

Monitor, invited to the eighth Çanakkale Biennial to be held between October 1st and November 5th, 2022, brings together Liliya Lifanova and Cevdet Erek in the exhibition titled What grows where it flows. The exhibition, which will take place at the Mekor Hayim Synagogue that is open for worship only on certain days of the year, is shaped by the source of life with an inspiration to the name of the place.

Although the source of life is a definition that can contain elements different from each other, interruption of flow in vital resources always leads to similar results. The exhibition titled What grows where it flows searches for possible forms of existence of life in a cosmos where the flow is not interrupted. Under what conditions does a system, where the movement from underground to the earth is uninterrupted, comes to a full stop? Based on T.S. Eliot’s poem The Waste Land, Liliya Lifanova has produced a performative video work titled Flight Over Wasteland, which she designed with sculpture, sound and installations. The destruction caused by the war brought about the moral and spiritual collapse of the society. Lifanova’s work, which focuses on issues that are still relevant, presents a narrative that proceeds through historical memory. In his book Palliative Society, Byung-Chul Han reflects on the fear of pain. He writes, “A society dominated by the hysteria of survival is a society of the undead. We are too alive to die and too dead to live.” * As long as history, memory, despair and disappointment remain buried in the cycle of nature, they are null and void for people willing to forget their dreams. However, when the continuity of the nature and the flow manifests itself with the arrival of spring, everything under the earth moves towards the surface. Flight Over Wasteland pursues meaning in a cosmos where the river no longer flows; where stone, soil, the living dead and only sad memories rule. The exhibition invites people to come under the shadow with calm repetitions to show them what is different from themselves. The compliance of the society under anesthesia to this call to the shadow is a revelation of the pain. Pain is the source for the deep bonds to be rebuilt. The transformation in human relations, which will enable the regaining of meaning, will open the way to salvation.

Cevdet Erek uses space, time and sound as elements that move together in his works. In his work called Courtyard Ornamentation with 4 Sounding Dots and a Shade, and a Synagogue, he invites the audience to the shadows just like Lifanova does. His work, located in the garden of Mekor Hayim Synagogue, is an adaptation of the Courtyard Ornamentation with 4 Sounding Dots and a Shade, which the artist produced for the 11th Sharjah Biennale in 2013. In addition, another version of the work called Courtyard Ornamentation with 4 Sounding Dots and a Prison was shown at the 5th Marrakech Biennial in 2014. In this work, which was specially produced for the courtyard of Mekor Hayim Synagogue, the parts of a rhythm emanating from the speakers placed at four different dots can only form a meaningful whole when they unite under the shade. The sound samples used as a source for the work are obtained by blowing the shophar made of ram horn, which is used by the Jews on their special and holy days. The artist creates a space for the thought of rhythm when proposing the interrelationships of sound patterns consisting of rhythmic repetitions rather than visuality regarding the “ornamentation” of architecture. In his book Rhythmanalysis, French thinker Henri Lefebvre mentions that the harmony between different rhythms creates an alliance as he explains the bond of social relations with rhythm. The collapse of the relationship between different elements that make up the society for various reasons reveals arrhythmia in time or space.** The combination of repetitions, which Lefebvre defines to be cyclical and linear, constitutes the measure of rhythm, that is, time.*** The space, where we listen to the street through its window all day, gives us information about that space with its concrete and abstract rhythms. The data that can lead to the source of the space can be reached when these rhythms come together. Lefebvre says that intervening in a space with rhythm has the purpose of strengthening the eurhythmy.**** The intention of the setup of Cevdet Erek’s Courtyard Ornamentation with 4 Sounding Dots and a Shade, and a Synagogue in this space is to open the space where more than one rhythm will affect each other creatively. Accordingly, it is the search for finding the eurhythmy of a healthy body in today’s society by way of eliminating the arrhythmic situation where something goes wrong. The work, created by Erek with his rhythmanalist delicacy, incorporates gracefully to silence, allowing us to see the lost other again under the shadow and discover what togetherness would bring back.

The exhibition What grows where it flows, which dreams of another existence of the world whose flow has been interrupted for various reasons, feeds on the human side of togetherness.
The exhibition tries to find the truth that extends the “healing hand of the other”***** to the future through the trauma of the past and indifference of the present.

Doğal akışına müdahale edilen her şey sapmaya uğruyor.

İz Öztat “Bir Ada Teşkil Etmek” isimli çalışmasını, kendisine on yılı aşkın süredir görünen Zişan (1894-1970) karakterinin bir hikâyesinden yola çıkarak üretir. Yapılan baraj nedeniyle yıllar önce sular altında kalan Adakale’nin, Tuna Nehri üzerindeki varlığının izlerini işaretleyen çalışma, sanki zamanın akşını tersine döndürebilecek bir ütopyaya ulaşmak için bir döngü oluşturmaktadır. Suyun üzerinde çizilen daireler sonsuz tekrarlarda sürüp giderken sabırla öğretir. Öztat’ın anlatımında Tuna Nehri, yeraltında akan Lethe’nin aksine hafızayı diri tutan bir araca dönüşür ve hırpalanmış düzenin ödettiği kefareti hatırlatır.

“The Box” ve “The Outline” isimli iki çalışmasıyla sergide yer alan Sena Başöz, yıkımın ardından gelen iyileşme süreciyle ilgilenir. “The Box” isimli videoda, uzun, toprak rengi saçlar ve ona şefkat gösteren eller görünür.

9 April – 8 June 2022

Monitor is returning to the physical space with its exhibition titled “Antaios of Despair” after two years of online program. The exhibition, which accepts as a guide the flow of nature as a time unit, brings together the video works of Ecem Arslanay and Yiğit Tanel Kaçar, Sena Başöz, Hera Büyüktaşçıyan, Özgül Kılınçarslan, İz Öztat and Ezgi Tok at Bahçelievler Multi-Storey Market Place in Karşıyaka, Izmir. The project is funded by CultureCIVIC: Culture and Arts Support Program, which is a European Union project, and supported by the Municipality of Karşıyaka, and it focuses on the state of slowing down to regain meaning in a world that has lost its gravity. The exhibition, which will be open from 9 April to 8 June 2022, also hosts a series of conversation programs. In addition to artist talks, Umut Altıntaş, Monica Papi, Güher Gürcan Tan and Tangör Tan, and Yasemin Ülgen from birbuçuk Collective will share their ways of addressing the slowing down through their own production and research practices.

Anything facing intervention to its natural flow deviates. The effect of this deviation is not limited to what it is directly related with, but spreads until it touches all living and non-living creatures. Emil Michel Cioran monitors human being’s struggle with time in his book “The Temptation to Exist”1, in which he tries to understand life without denying the reality of death. He sees that there is a state of desperation in the image of the person who does not surrender to the flow, who does not get lost in it, and who is running against time. Ecem Arslanay and Yiğit Tanel Kaçar’s work “The Clocks” provides a narrative about the starting point of the human attitude of the kind depicted by Cioran, the stages it led and will lead to. The useless effort of a person, who tries to fit more of everything in her/his short life, via acceleration with various ambitions, opens holes in existences. According to Arslanay and Kaçar, in a world full of emptied moments, a person can only regain the lost rhythm and continue on her/his course through the transformations s/he will make in her/his infrastructure.

İz Öztat produces her work “Constituting an Island” based on a story of Zişan character (1894-1970), who has been appearing to her for more than a decade. The work, which marks the traces of the existence of Adakale, which was flooded years ago due to the construction of a dam, on the Danube River, creates a cycle as if to reach a utopia that can reverse the course of time. Circles drawn on the water teach patiently as they proceed in endless repetitions. In Öztat’s narration, the Danube River, unlike Lethe that flows underground, becomes a vehicle that keeps memory alive and reminds us of the redemption that the battered order made us pay.

Sena Başöz takes place in the exhibition with two of her works titled “The Box” and “The Outline” and deals with the healing process that follows destruction. In the video titled “The Box”, we see long, earth colored hair and hands that show tenderness to it. As the strands of hair, which can be defined as antennas that transmit energy to the receiver, are combed with the help of fingers, various pieces come from the depths of the hair. In “The Outline”, there is a hand that combs the Rhine River in the opposite direction of the flow. What exists in the river and in the depths of the mind reminds us of the journey of the one, who was born from underground to the earth and dispread through the sky, and will one day return to the earth again.

In her video “The Waves”, Ezgi Tok marks the very last points that the waves reach on the beach with wooden sticks in a meditative state. Each of the waves, which stem from the same source but are subjected to different effects, travels with its own unique acceleration. This marking, which can be read at first glance as a “futile” effort, wants to capture the moments of time that have lost their spaces. Byung – Chul Han argues in his book “The Scent of Time”2 that blaming acceleration for the loss of the threshold of time would not lead us to the right place and speaks about the necessity of an order where life based on deep thought is considered to be more valuable than active life. Only then, the human being who got mechanized by industrialization does not lose what is permanent.

As everything quickly ages within time that has lost its foundation, human being tends to forget and destroy. The time that has lost its rhythm, the “inappropriate time” as defined by Chul Han,3 has also lost its scent . The scent is incapable of keeping up with the age of acceleration due to its structure. In Özgül Kılınçarslan’s work “Glass House”, we dream of being able to catch the scent of the soil and the lemon tree, and to go out to the courtyard and see the sun even though it is covered with walls. As Kılınçarslan carries the lemon tree, which has been uprooted and trapped in a glass house, to the courtyard graciously, she does not know yet that the place whose corridors she has been wandering will turn into a wreck. She accepts both turning to a trace and the healing with reference to the whole. However, the traces must be able to find their weight in order for the existence not to end, and for this, the mind and body in constant motion must stop for a moment. Hera Büyüktaşçıyan pursues the architectural traces left by the 1947 exchange that divided India and Pakistan. These traces form parts of a distributed whole that can sometimes be barely noticed. In the artist’s work “Infinite Nectar”, a marble hand makes an inter-temporal travel among the streets and history of a forgotten city. In a fragmented place where the traces are covered with new ones, Büyüktaşçıyan overcomes these obstacles with the help of Maharani Jindan Kaur, a female character who has been erased from history. Chul Han says that it is essential to look at history and reshape every detail that forms it in order to overcome the crisis4 of time . In today’s society, the individual is not in a position to hold on to what is permanent in the face of the values s/he has lost. Everything comes, everything goes, there is nothing left that carries weight. But this lightness does not lead to a slowdown like the essential meaning of the question, “can you be like a feather rather than a bullet?” The emptied things fall down without any difference from each other in an environment without air resistance..

As the exhibition “The Antaios of Despair” addresses slowing down, it proposes to object to the rhythm of the world that does not suit its flow, and to adjust breathing to the flow of the world. The proposed slowing down is different from having to slow down by reaching the point of obstruction. It is about taking steps, being aware of the uniqueness of each step taken and creating paths, rather than reaching something speedily.

*The “Antaios of Despair” exhibition takes its name from a sentence in Emil Michel Cioran’s book “Tears and Saints”: “I’m the Antaeus of despair. Any contact with earth increases my despair.” The giant Antaios, son of Gaia, is reborn with the power he draws from the ground every time he is knocked down by his wrestlers.

Birin içinde iki ⎮ Two into one

Gizem Karakaş – Borga Kantürk

15 – 30/04/2021

Her safhasını ayrı isimle adlandırırız.

Monitor is taking part in Lens‘21, which will be organized in collaboration with Mixer, Bilsart and Loading as part of Senkron ‘Synchronized Video Exhibitions’ that will bring together various art institutions from Turkey. The online exhibition titled “Two into one” brings together the works of Gizem Karakaş and Borga Kantürk from 15 to 30 April.

In his text, The World of Perception*, Maurice Merleau-Ponty wants to draw our attention to the parts that make up the world we see, so that we can understand in depth what is real. According to the author, parts of a whole do not form it just by juxtaposition. All parts are one. Each property possessed by the whole is the whole of the part.

Although our identities are formed in a similar way, they are perceived by a different system than grasping objects. The moon is imprinted in minds as it is seen from the world. Different parts of it can be seen at different times. Although it is a whole, the parts that we can see from where we stand are limited. We call each phase of it by a different name. It has no dark side, but there are parts of it that we cannot see from our location. This mass that contains many things is a whole, and each phase of it has different effects for the world. Perhaps the most well-known of these effects is that it draws water towards itself.

Could it be an appropriate analogy to think at some stage that self-portrait progresses with a planning similar to that of the moon? Factors such as the existential issues encountered as an artist, social events, and the order imposed by the dynamics the artist is involved in often play a decisive role in the construction of an artist’s identity. The process of reflecting these factors is determined by the parts that constitute her/his integrity.

Karl Jaspers talks about his relationship with the sea that began in his childhood years, on a television show he attended shortly before he passed away.** Although they had lived by the sea for many years, his realization of the sea began with observing the ebb tide one day when he went to the beach with his father. He was fascinated by the things that appeared after the sea has retreated. The waves, sea creatures, the infinity and variability of the sea with all its parts, have formed the background of Jasper’s life since that day. One of the benefits of this eternity is that it carries human beings beyond just being where they are. Borga Kantürk, whom we have often encountered in the state of going beyond in production practice, continues his similar practice in his work named “Side Job: A Preoccupation”. Behind the multiple identities he has, the progress of works takes shape with what he has accumulated. Behind the integrity presented to us, there are many pieces classified in their own order.

Developed by Friedrich Salomon Perls, Laura Perls and Paul Goodman in the 1940s as a form of therapy, Gestalt is associated with the state of being whole. When a person is evaluated without considering her/his environment and her/his relationship with that environment, the result will be incomplete. In Gestalt therapy, all parts are evaluated with reference to their relationship with the whole. But before studying the whole, the reflection of each part in consciousness must be studied. In Gizem Karakaş’s work, we encounter autobiographical elements that are shaped by the people she is in contact with and the way she communicates with them. In the video work “Attention! Attention!”, which the artist dedicated to the gallery owner, the collector, the journalist and the audience, we come across words that pour out of the mind without getting stuck in any filter. Each of the concepts of lower self, self and upper self takes place in Karakaş’s work, which she conveys through the method of internal dialogue. Everything that pertains to herself, and directs, nurtures, and divides what pertains to herself is reflected in the attitude of the artist. Instead of trying to create balance, she tells about what she should convey without using any media by confronting whatever is suppressed that damages the whole.

“Two into one” invites the audience to the course that constitutes the whole of the cycle through Borga Kantürk’s and Gizem Karakaş’s works that could be named as self-portraits.

Unutulan dünyada, dünyanın unuttuğu ⎮The world forgetting, by the world forgot

“Unutulan dünyada, dünyanın unuttuğu”

Niklas Goldbach – Berkay Tuncay

23/11 – 7/12/2020

Marvin’in moralinin daima bozuk olmasının ardında, hafızasını kaplayanların hiçbirini unutamayacak şekilde tasarlanmış olması vardır.

Çalışmalarında, internetin küresel toplum üzerindeki etkilerini inceleyen Berkay Tuncay, “Poems from Instant Messaging (ASMR)“ ismini taşıyan videosunu, hızla devam eden bilgi akışının sebep olduğu anksiyete problemlerinden yola çıkarak kurgular.

“The world forgetting, by the world forgot”

Niklas Goldbach – Berkay Tuncay

23/11 – 7/12/2020

Monitor brings together the works of Niklas Goldbach and Berkay Tuncay in the latest exhibition of the 2020 program, which is carried out online due to the pandemic. The exhibition titled “The world forgetting, by the world forgot” presents a narrative that examines the possible effects of memory and non-fading memory on human psychology in the digital age.

Alvin Toffler mentions in his book*, where he examines the effects of technology shortly before the 21st century, that millions of people who do not have psychological problems will experience difficulties due to the future that will come before its time. Toffler predicts that this future that suddenly arrives will transform the society into a savage society. The future, bringing with it the concept of temporariness, affects our usual moods and our way of thinking. The life of a person, who has to make more decisions in less time, changes along with her/his psychology. The rapidly flowing life outside forces one to be faster. And this makes it easier to quickly consume many things in life.

In Niklas Goldbach’s 2017 work “The Foundry”, the third part of the series “Form and Control”, which focuses on late capitalist culture and its impact on architectural structures, we encounter a technology that tries to speed up daily life. The video, which is recorded in the region called Silicon Saxony, where the factories producing in the micro-electronics sector are located, brings together the speed reading technique and the mind of the android that has all the knowledge of the universe. Various texts accompany the external views of Globalfoundries, one of the largest computer chip producing companies. These texts are presented to the audience with the reading technique called “spritz” that has been created in order to train people to the speed of technology. The words, whose fixation points are highlighted in different colors, flow in the same line and serve to train the brain so that it can increase the average reading speed of the human at least twice. The texts in “The Foundry” consist of quotations from Douglas Adams’ depressive robot Marvin in “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. The information that Toffler sees as the fuel of technology is endlessly available to Marvin. The reason why Marvin is always depressed is that he is designed in such a way that he cannot forget anything in his memory.

Berkay Tuncay, who examines the effects of internet on the global society in his studies, builds his video titled “Poems from Instant Messaging (ASMR)” on the anxiety problems caused by the rapidly proceeding information flow. The poem, which is compiled in alphabetical order based on the abbreviations used in instant messaging channels, is performed by Nynke Norberhuis with the ASMR technique, which means autonomous sensory meridian response. The ASMR provides relief from the anxiety state of the audience through methods such as whispering, repeating, touching and gently tapping. This technique, which leads to the emergence of both psychological and physical sensations, helps to cope with depression by slowing the heart rhythm and creating a meditative effect.

The exhibition titled “The world forgetting, by the world forgot” seeks possible ways to heal the mind that is exposed to information overload.

Eğer Bunlar Senin Ayak İzlerinse ⎮If These Are Your Footprints

Eğer bunlar senin ayak izlerinse

Deniz Üster – Matthew Bird

06-20/11/2020

Deniz Üster’in, The Farook Foundation desteğiyle gerçekleştirdiği “Beyond is Before” ismini taşıyan çalışmasında, su ve petrolün artık mevcut olmadığı bir düzen hakim.

If these are your footprints

Deniz Üster – Matthew Bird

06-20/11/2020

Supported by Spaces of Culture, Monitor brings together Deniz Üster and Matthew Bird in the exhibition titled “If these are your footprints”.

“If these are your footprints” deepens on one of the most fundamental questions and seeks to raise the possibilities of rethinking the functioning of the universe and the needs of human beings that multiply the conditions of human survival. Each of the new-born expects his/her various needs to be met in order to continue living. Each of the growing adds the needs that are necessary to enjoy life to the needs that are necessary to survive. How many pieces does someone need to feel complete? How many more steps need to be taken to reach the dream place? Is it possible to talk about the possibility of having what is desired and needed at one’s elbow? “If these are your footprints” aims to be a reminder of the fact that the existence of what is dreamed that always places itself away, may consist of our own fiction. Could it be that the urgent need for more, wanting more of happiness, more of success, more of power derive from the struggle of holding on to life in an emptiness where what is happening cannot be understood? While the desperate demands move forward leaving wreckage behind, the place arrived together is exactly the place where we stand now. This is not a story built on depictions of the future. The earth has turned into a space that we insistently consume in order to stay in the dimension we stand in the universe that we travel around as nomads. If it were possible to start over in a world where more than necessary was taken without thinking that it should have a response, how should this be constructed?

In Deniz Üster’s work titled “Beyond is Before”, realized with the support of The Farook Foundation, there is an order where water and oil are no longer available. Someone who has managed to stay in the world has a resource that can be used as food and fuel in order to survive in this order. The story set in the freezing desert of Dubai in a post-apocalyptic future takes place in Nad Al Sheba, a formerly inhabited Royal land that has undergone urban transformation. The protagonist of the story finds a resource in the form of a half-tree and halfchest that turns the materials put inside into their raw materials. This resource has a reverse factory system that converts cotton products into fibers and plastics into crude oil. The products that come out from this resource encourage the character in the story to create a garden. When the idea of agriculture, which constitutes the step of settled life, just started to develop, the man who could not prevent the chest from calling him, started a journey where the parts reached the whole, this time himself entering the chest to turn into his raw material.

In Matthew Bird’s work titled “Parallaxis”, which he produced in 2020, we see that two trackers, unclear from which timeframe of future they came, are doing research on archaic generations. The twosome, who do not seem to be belonging to the earth, are doing exploration and archiving at the same time with their cylindrical devices that they drive along fields like twin orbits. These cylindrical structures, which are also useful in determining the needs for a better order, record in their system whatever memory is involved, as they pass through wheat fields that have been genetically modified, perhaps repeatedly. War and massacres, the popular culture of the time, migration, extinction, birth, death and hope make up some of the recorded memory. The memory of a generation that will need futuristic devices for its formation will be filled with the kind of destruction that eliminates the word destruction. This instrument, which measures the past, present and future, will only be able to establish a communication network with everything else when it can find the main center.

Could the place, where the pieces return to their essence in “Beyond is Before”, be the center that is sought and where everything will be understandable once found in “Parallaxis”?

Hermann Hesse says that when the trees, which he regards as the most sacred being, are cut down, years full of struggles, happiness, diseases and storms become visible in their age rings and burls; “s/he who learns to listen to trees does not desire to be a tree anymore”* says Hesse. According to Hesse, reaching the truth is only possible through learning how to speak to trees. “If these are your footprints” wants to create a narrative that aims to remind that we need to review all the paths we have paced and move on to another order possible.

Henüz bahçeme söylemedim ⎮ I Haven’t told my garden yet

Henüz bahçeme söylemedim

Sasha Pirogova* – Kerem Ozan Bayraktar

17 – 30/10/2020

I haven’t told my garden yet

Sasha Pirogova* – Kerem Ozan Bayraktar

17 – 30/10/2020

Supported by Spaces of Culture, Monitor brings together Sasha Pirogova and Kerem Ozan Bayraktar in the exhibition entitled “I haven’t told my garden yet.” Created on the basis of the origin of life, the exhibition focuses on its structure that continues to exist in different forms.

Assuming that everything is a remnant of the previous one, what is left behind each one merges with the other and turns into something else. Although that is no longer here in its previous form, it constitutes the building blocks of the other. It is still here; breathing, becoming breathe and being released back to the world. When Karl Raimund Popper talks about organisms that transform into each other in an effort to turn their environment into a better place, he refers to the three states of the cell consisting of death, fragmentation and fusion. According to the author, the main cell that constitutes all the other cells still exists, thanks to its journey between forms, and has transformed the earth into a garden.* * The light, which is the first thing that appeared in the big bang starting the story, rose from within the darkness. According to Popper, the most important feature of organisms “is that they fill the atmosphere with oxygen and have found out that sunlight can be used as food.”*** The light was followed by the world of plants and animals. In her video titled “Garden”, Sasha Pirogova deals with the life and death through the concepts of dark and light. In the artist’s work, darkness is grasped as a lack of light not the opposites of the light as habitually perceived. According to Pirogova, the human being is a source of light. If there is human, there is hope for the light appears. In this way, the human being creates the garden in which flowers continue to bloom eternally. “Garden” is a story that refers to the life which triumphs.

The emergence of oxygen, which caused the death of many life forms, brought human beings to the world, along with its current inhabitants. When the world was about half of its present age, photosynthesis by cyanobacteria enabled oxygen to spread into the atmosphere and the development of multicellular organisms. Kerem Ozan Bayraktar, in his work “Respiration”, conveys the relationship he established between life and death with a section he presented after the Great Oxidation Event. Death, which is seen as the final stop of all living beings, does not fulfill the last task regarding extinction from the earth and constitutes the steps of the movement. The ambulances in the artist’s work, which are associated with the moments when life is at risk, need energy to move like everything else. The living organisms of time transform over the years and get into circulation of the earth in different states of matter. The original cell that makes up all other cells continues to disintegrate and come together in the infinite form it takes on.

“I haven’t told my garden yet” tries to remind the two-way continuity of flow, inspired by the silent motion of plants, in our time when thinking on extinction has universally increased.

“Birlikte, yabancıyız”

Vajiko Chachkiani – Senem Gökçe Oğultekin

01 – 14 / 10 / 2020

Kültür için Alan tarafından desteklenen kâr amacı gütmeyen güncel sanat oluşumu Monitor, üçüncü yılının ilk etkinliğinde Vajiko Chachkiani ve Senem Gökçe Oğultekin’i “Birlikte, yabancıyız” sergisiyle bir araya getiriyor. Pandemi nedeniyle bu sene çevrimiçi kanallar aracılığıyla izlenebilecek sergilerden ilki, kişinin toplumsal bağlardan sıyrılıp kendi birliğinin içindeki çokluğu görebilme mücadelesine odaklanıyor.

Karl R. Popper “Daha İyi Bir Dünya Arayışı” isimli kitabında, organizmaların yuvaları, çatıları ve sıradağları yapılandırmasının arkasında, daha iyi bir dünya arayışının olduğundan söz eder. Organizmalar bu yolda, yeni çevreleri bulup keşfeder ve onları değiştirirler.* “Birlikte, yabancıyız”, devredilen anılar üzerinden kurgulanmış benliklerimizin temsil ettiklerinden ayrılıp bize ait olanın peşine düştüğümüz bir hikâyenin giriş bölümünü oluşturuyor.

Vajiko Chachkiani 2017’de ürettiği “Winter which was not there” isimli çalışmasını, kendi tarihinden kurtulmaya çalışan kişi metaforundan yola çıkarak hazırlar.

“Together We’re Stranger”

Vajiko Chachkiani – Senem Gökçe Oğultekin

01 – 14 / 10 / 2020

Non-profit contemporary art organization Monitor, supported by Spaces of Culture, brings together Vajiko Chachkiani and Senem Gökçe Oğultekin with the exhibition “Together, We’re Stranger” in the first event of its third year. The first of the Monitor exhibitions that can be seen through online channels this year, due to the pandemic, focuses on the struggle of the individual to get out of social ties and see the multiplicity in her/his own unity.

In his book “In Search of a Better World” Karl R. Popper speaks of the search for a better world as the cause behind organisms’ structuring nests, roofs and range of mountains. In this way, organisms find and discover new environments and change them.*  “Together, we are strangers” is the introduction part of a story in which we pursue what belongs to us, breaking away from what our selves represent, building on transferred memories.

Vajiko Chachkiani bases his work titled “Winter which was not there”, which he produced in 2017, on the metaphor of an individual trying to liberate from his/her own history. The monumental statue, unearthed from under the sea, travels tied to the back of a vehicle that belongs to the man sharing the same image with the statue. In this work, where we witness the destruction of the self, built on transferred memory; ruptures from the illusions on which existence depends take place with the find, collect, destroy stages. In this story, which draws  the profile of a person who moves away from what he represents and approaches to being himself, the burden of the transferred past is left behind on the road, travelled tied to a rope.

One of what E. M. Cioran tells in his book “History and Utopia” is that when we no longer have illusions about ourselves, then there will be no illusions about anyone else, as well. According to the author, the one who makes self-knowledge an objective for her/himself, s/he is now ready to face the dirty reasons behind her/his actions.**

Senem Gökçe Oğultekin portrays an unrealized version within the possibilities between the two nations in her work titled “Dun / Home”, which she shot in Ani in 2017. In the video, we share the self discovery of two characters, one stranger and the other host, so as to understand and accept each other. What could fulfill the function of a bridge that no longer connects the two sides? Could watching the different species that continue to exist among the ruins, and realizing their way of being enable us to construct new ways of connection? Could the feeling that there are no two sides, that the stranger is just an illusion within us with the transmitted past, make all ways of connection unnecessary?

Loosening our tightly held ties and looking for opportunities to meet with ourselves in various possibilities, “Together, We’re Stranger” constructs a narrative through the possibilities of seeing the real thing that brings us together

Beni Güzel Bir Yerlere Götür
Hale Tenger – Šejla Kamerić
20 – 30/12/2019

Hale Tenger’in “Beyrut” isimli çalışmasında, bir zamanların göz kamaştırıcı St. Georges Hotel’inin pencerelerini görürüz.

Kamerić’in çalışmasında, bu görevi müzik üstlenir.

Take Me Somewhere Nice
Hale Tenger – Šejla Kamerić
20 – 30/12/2019
Opening: 20/12/2019, 05:30 pm

Monitor, supported by Spaces of Culture, hosts Hale Tenger and Šejla Kamerić in the last exhibition of 2019. The exhibition, “Take Me Somewhere Nice” discusses social traumas through the silence left behind and the interrupted flow of daily life. The exhibition starts with the talk with Hale Tenger and Özlem Altunok at 17:30 on December 20th at Kardıçalı Han, İzmir.

Make me a picture of the sun-
So I can hang it in my room-
And make believe I’m getting warm When others call it “Day”!*

In Hale Tenger’s work “Beirut”, we watch the windows of the once glamorous St. Georges Hotel. The hotel that was damaged during the Lebanese civil war, has waited for renovation for long years and was damaged again as a result of the bomb attack against Refik Hariri in 2005. While it is forbidden to shoot around the hotel, the undamaged front of the hotel was clandestinely shot by the artist from the window of another hotel room. In Tenger’s work that presents a glance from geographies that share a similar faith, we watch the night and day, and the hope and fear turning into each other. The movement of white curtains flying out with the force of the wind is accompanied by the music of Serdar Ateşer, with whom Tenger has been working for many years. When the day turns into the night, the wind blows even stronger and sounds of an Israeli bomb attack during the 34- day long war in 2006 is added to this part of the video, which was recorded in 2005, shortly after the incident. What is left behind is not only the remnants of the damaged and abandoned building, but also the surviving, hopeful and resisting aspects of societies in face of all massacres and despotism.

Šejla Kamerić prepares her 2011 dated work “1395 Days without Red” with a reference to the impact of siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1996 on social psychology. In this work, we see people trying to walk during the siege times in the region called as “Sniper Alley” after the snipers placed on hills surrounding Sarajevo. Those people are exactly the local people who try to avoid being a target by wearing unobtrusive clothes and try to lead their daily lives. In his book “L’attesa e la Speranza” Eugenio Borgna writes about the dead-ends in our lives caused by anxiety. In the same book, Borgna makes use of Maria Zambrano’s book to get the reader comprehend where the hope arises from. Accordingly, hope is a bridge-road and its absence can drag one down the cliff.** Unpassable places become passable with hope. In Kamerić’s work, this task is assigned to the music. In the film, the woman followed by the camera moves on with the power she drives from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.6.
Bad events have remained in the past, people had losses, days have gone by and still do at the present moment; although the world has rotated around the sun many times, it has not been possible to get rid of the memories of what has been lived through. What has left traces in the sky has not been a part of the show; after that day, psychological traumas emerged with no possibility of rehabilitation for many generations to come. Nevertheless, “all living beings are in search for a better world”*** according to Karl Raimund Popper, and all changes occur due to this search.

“Take Me Somewhere Nice”, the dream of a tranquil sky expected to appear after all social traumas lived through together, will be open until December 30th at Kardıçalı Han.

Büyük Kardıçalı Han, No: 225
30/11 – 14/12/2019

Mirza ve Butler çiftinin 2012 yılında ürettiği çalışması “Hold Your Ground”, “nasıl akıllıca protesto edilir?” sorusundan yola çıkarak şekillenir. “Hold Your Ground”, yasaklı sözcüklerin arttığı, düşünce özgürlüğünden eser kalmayan yerlerde yaşamlarını sürdürenlere eleştirmek için alternatif bir yol önerir. Aynı varış noktasına, dolaylı bir güzergâh izleyip anayoldan sapıp zig zaglar çizerek ulaşmak, sesin kesilmemesi için tek kaçış yolu olabilir mi?

Noor Afshan Mirza’nın katılımıyla 30 Kasım’da Kardiçalı Han’da açılacak “Karanlığı Taramak”, 14 Aralık’a dek ziyaret edilebilecek.

Opening: 30/11/2019, 06:00 pm
Monitor, supported by Spaces of Culture, gathers the works of Aslı Çavuşoğlu and Noor Afshan Mirza and Brad Butler couple in the exhibition entitled “A Scanner Darkly”. The exhibition can be visited at Kardiçalı Han (Inn) from 30 November to 14 December.
“To recover the trace of the nothing, of the incompleteness, the imperfection of the crime, we have, then, to take something away from the reality of the world. To recover the constellation of the mystery [secret], we have to take something away from the accumulation of reality and language. We have to take words from language one by one, take things from reality one by one, wrest the same away from the same. Behind every fragment of reality, something has to have disappeared in order to ensure the continuity of the nothing — without, however, yielding to the temptation of annihilation, for disappearance has to remain a living disappearance, and the trace of the crime a living trace.”**
In her work “Murder in Three Acts”, that she produced in the scope of Frieze Arts Fair, Aslı Çavuşoğlu turns the fairground into a crime scene and a forensic laboratory where pieces of art in the crime scene are examined for the sake of solving the murder. In this work, the murder, which is tried to be solved by conventional methods, turns into performance, and the pieces of art into evidence. However, the solution does not rely on analyzing the reality. Like the body pieces embedded in the cement, what is hidden cannot be revealed when it is physically found. The crime scene is not the place to examine in order to constitute the plotline and comprehend the reason of the murder. All questions are answered when the meaning of the collection is realized.

The murder is solved sooner or later. There is no perfect murder. Any murder leaves behind en evidence or evidences. There are other powers behind unsolved murders and others to follow the case even when years pass. A piece of art sometimes constitutes a threat against those involved in the murder. In such a case the artist turns the metaphor of darkness into a method of production. What we would initially associate with murder would be the feeling of fear and insecurity. Bad incidents are more probable to happen in darkness. What one sees can be misleading; but the existing situation does not disappear when the light is on. On the other hand, darkness can be preferred if hiding and remaining safe is the priority. What spreads fear turns into a shelter. “Hold Your Ground”, produced jointly by Mirza and Butler in 2012, is shaped basing on the question, “how can a smart protest be possible?”. “Hold Your Ground” offers an alternative way of criticism for those who live in places where forbidden words have increased and there is no trace of freedom of thought. Can it be the only escapeway to follow an indirect route, depart from the main road and zigzag to reach the same destination in order not to silence down?
“A Scanner Darkly” opens at Kardiçalı Han on November 30th with the participation of Noor Afshan Mirza, and will close with the talk with Aslı Çavuşoğlu and Mustafa Ergül on December 14th.

The Sound of No-One Listening

Corridor Project Space, In Your Own Backyard serisinin dördüncüsünde Monitor ile işbirliği yapıyor.

Sara Bjarland’ın çalışmalarının temelini, insanların her arzusunda yeniden kurdukları dünyadan artakalanlar oluşturur.

The Sound of No-One Listening isimli sergi, dünyaya hükmetmekte beis görmeyen insanın bakış açısından uzaklaşıp, farklı zaman ölçütünün olduğu bir uzamda, doğasından alıkoyulmuşların yaşam alanına sızmaya çalışır. İhtiyaçlarını gidermek için kendi türü dahil herkesi ve her şeyi sömüren, onları hapsedeceği formları ortaya çıkarmada üreticiye dönüşen insanın evrende yer kaplayanlarla parazitizm üzerinden kurduğu ilişkide yardımcı eleman olarak arkaplana atılanların yok edilen doğalarında hayatta kalma hikâyelerine odaklanır.

The Sound of No-One Listening

Corridor Project Space cooperates with Monitor in the fourth edition of In Your Own Backyard series.  “The Sound of No-One Listening” brings together the works of Ozan Atalan, Kerem Ozan Bayraktar, Sara Bjarland, Ali İbrahim Öcal and Kato Six, and can be visited at Corridor Project Space from October 26th to November 9th.

“What is this man? A mass of diseases that reach out into the world through the spirit; there they want to get their prey. What is this man? A coil of wild serpents that are seldom at peace among themselves–so they go forth apart and seek prey in the world.”

Throughout his/her presence in various centuries, the human turned all living creatures into an object at the background of his/her world they shaped over and over by their altering desires. During and after the intermeshing process of agriculture, industry and information societies, the competences as well as desires of the human have undergone a change. While losing some of the talents, the human being acquired some new skills and all that acquired led to certain losses at various dimensions.

What human feared the most to lose was the time. In order to save time, s/he speeded up all the rest. Now, unable to wait as much as it wishes underground, the seed is forced to come to light in the time unit of the modern human. Considering that s/he can rule over everything, the human tries to dominate probably the only thing that s/he cannot capture: the time. S/he is inadequate even when s/he thinks s/he is organized in the most “productive” way. If the time were to be freed from the flow of the human, would it move away from being a phenomenon to catch and save, and become a part of the nature?

In his work Default Settings: Dasein, Ozan Atalan presents a different version of time taking the nature as the criterion. Atalan tries to catch the rythm of the nature through the waves that hit the aquarium that he has placed in Pacific Ocean. The energy produced by the wind turning into wave gives us the real time period, while reminding us that the human-invented time is just about an imitation of nature.

“Each of our desires re-creates the world; each of our thoughts destroys it. Cosmogony and apocalypse follow each other in daily life: We are daily creators and destroyers, we actualize eternal myths in an extremely small scale; and each of our moments is a sketch of the destiny of seed and ash that falls to the share of the Eternal, and re-produces this destiny.”

The remnants of the world that is constructed over and over with each desire of the human, underlies the works of Sara Bjarland. Sometimes a dried house plant that cannot embellish its house any more, and sometimes a furniture dismissed as it is replaced by a new one, springs to life in the human-free world of Bjarland. The waste materials move away from their attributed meanings and forms maybe for the first time, and turn to characters of another story in the artist’s works. In her work at the exhibition, Bjarland re-interprets the ivy, which was used as symbol of immortality in mythology, within the conditions of the world we live in. In the world we live in, the ivy is the doppelgänger of the human. Like the ivy drying the tree she has surrounded inwardly, the human has prepared the end of everything s/he has touched for the sake of leading a life in pursuit of her/his pleasures. The only point the two depart is that contrary to the ivy, the human shall also end up after all that s/he has dried.

In his exhibition work entitled Nocturne, Kerem Ozan Bayraktar develops a narrative basing on plants that grow by themselves on the roadside and various areas of the city. The video work of Bayraktar sheds light on the life of these plants in unexpected places in the dark of the night. Do these living beings, that spread out to far from their original places with the effect of the wind intermingling with the sound of sirens, only destroy the pureness of the places they exist in? In this work of the artist, we come across interaction areas where human is excluded from the geared system instead of a nature multiplied artificially by human intervention that existed in previous works of the artist. This area of dispersion does not take into account the principle of utilitarianism. In such a system, what makes a person happy is not the actions but only upcoming incidents. Though grown naturally, these living beings seem not to be in their natural environment. These plants can be compared to people who are obliged to live in bad conditions so that members of a particular class shall be able to lead a “better life”.

Kato Six tries to find this natural environment in different ways in her works. She re-structures objects in order to make us feel at home in the world. This, she makes possible with not what human has retained from nature with similar passions, but with intervening in objects we use daily in our living space.

We see the stages of the life cycle in Ali İbrahim Öcal’s works. The horses that are symbols of independence and power in most beliefs are his subject for questioning the relationship between human and animals. He produces this installation with the inspiration he derived from the Greek artist Jannis Kounellis’ work  Unnamed (12 Horse). The work is based on the idea that the human uses the living beings in the nature the way s/he desires in order to improve his or her living conditions, and calls us to contemplate on how animals, enslaved and deprived of their freedom in different ways, would exist in a human-free world.

The Sound of No-One Listening exhibition tries to move away from the perspective of human who does not consider it harmful to rule over the world and to leak into the living space of those that are deprived of their nature in a space with a different time criterion. The human exploits everything, including his/her own kind, and turns to a producer in finding out forms to imprison them in order to satisfy his/her needs. The exhibition focuses on the survival stories of those who are pushed to the background as an assistant in the relationship the human has constructed with the survivors of the universe basing on parasitism.

Pelin Tan – Anton Vidokle, Ali Cherri
Açılış / Opening: 28/09/2019, 18:00
109. Sokak No: 104, Buca

Monitor, yeni sezonu “A hymn to those that disappear” başlığını taşıyan sergisiyle karşılıyor.

Lübnan doğumlu sanatçı Ali Cherri’nin Sharjah çölündeki Neolitik Çağ’dan bir nekropolde geçen çalışması “The Digger” arkeolojini

Son Bakışta Sanat kitabında Taylan Altuğ, Schiller’in estetik teorisine ve onun politik düzenin değişmesinin insanın düşünce tarzındaki toptan değişimin gerçekleşmesine bağlı olduğuna değinir.

Yaşamdan olanın sanata dönüştürülmesini ve yaşamın tamamının sanata dönüşümünü sunan örnekler üzerinden devlet, toplum ve sanat arasındaki ilişkinin sorgulandığı “A hymn to those that disappear”, 13 Ekim Pazar gününe dek Buca’da ziyaret edilebilir.

Monitor welcomes the new season with the “A hymn to those that disappear” exhibition. The cooperation of Pelin Tan and Anton Vidokle meets with Ali Cherri’s work in this exhibition. The exhibition opens its doors with a conversation with Pelin Tan and Deniz Güner on September 28

th in a venue that was used as a cinema and printing house in Buca in the past.

“In the historical materialist they have to reckon with a distanced observer. For what he surveys as the cultural heritage is part and parcel of a lineage which he cannot contemplate without horror. It owes its existence not only to the toil of the great geniuses, who created it, but also to the nameless drudgery of its contemporaries. There has never been a document of culture, which is not simultaneously one of barbarism. And just as it is itself not free from barbarism, neither is it free from the process of transmission, in which it falls from one set of hands into another.”*

In his work “The Digger”, that is based on a necropolis from Neolithic Age in Sharjah Desert, artist Ali Cherri, born in Lebanon, examines the relationship of archeology with colonialism and capitalism. Sultan Zeib Khan, who has been the protector of the necropolis for more than twenty years, has a role in the work among the huge rocky place that surrounds the necropolis. The absence of those who lived there once,

discloses an emptiness that is more disruptive than the existence of the necropolis. The pieces that belong to people of past times who were displaced for ideological reasons, now constitute national identities by being carried inside the borders of a museum constructed for building a historical narrative and presented under lightened and protected glass. The desire to turn what belongs to life into cultural products in order to aggrandize its meaning serves the way of thinking that constituted skyscrapers that seem not to be too far from the necropolis.

In his book Art at Last Sight (Son Bakışta Sanat), Taylan Altuğ touches upon the aesthetics theory of Schiller and his opinion that the change in political order depends on realization of a total change in people’s way of thinking. The emotional and cognitive features required for the freedom of a person can only develop with the presence of art. In Altuğ’s narration, Schiller argues that laws of beauty rule where art prevails. Only in such an atmosphere it becomes possible to move out of the patterns of reality and after that comes freedom.**

Pelin Tan and Anton Vidokle’s joint work “The Fall of The Artsits’ Republic” presents a way of government that allows such freedom as an example of an aesthetic state where the act of “realizing”*** society can be possible. Neither a state of power nor a state of ethics could realize that. Then, why has this way of government that provides ideal socialization for humanity, collapsed?

In his book The Human Essence, George Thomson argues that life is all about conflicts and when these conflicts come to an end life would also end. According to the author, the organism’s constant exchange of material with its environment constitutes the life itself. The survival of the organism is directly related to the continuity of this exchange****. Basing on Thomson’s assumption, is it possible to connect the collapse of the artist’s republic due to transformation of the whole daily life into arts to remaining of no field that art can conflict with and therefore removal of channels that arts could feed on?

“A hymn to those that disappear”, which questions the relationship between the state, society and arts basing on examples presenting transforming what belongs to life into arts and transforming the whole life into arts, can be visited in Buca until October 13th.

Platon’un Mağarasından Kaçış
03-24.05.2019
Açılış: 03.05.2019, Cuma
19:00 – 21:00
Originn

… Biz birbirimizi bu roller içinde tanırız; bu rollerde kendimizi tanırız.”*

Yansıtan tek bir yüzeyin varlığının, hareketlerin seyrini belirlediği varsayıldığında, bedeninden çıkan emarelerin izleyicisine dönüşen kişinin kendiyle baş başa kalma olasılığından bahsetmek mümkün müdür? Benlik, görebilecek hiçbir göz, yansıyacak tek bir yüzey olmadığında karşılaştığımız mı, yoksa yansıyana karşı yansıyanla birlikte geliştirdiğimiz ayakta kalma biçimi midir?

Çalışmalarını ve yaşamını Amsterdam’da sürdüren İsrail doğumlu sanatçı Avi Krispin’in, There Was a Time When Men Died for Honor isimli videosunda, gecenin geç saatlerinden gün doğumuna dek sürdüğü aracıyla, terk edilmiş bir deponun önünde durup, az sonra bürüneceği rolüyle tutarlı olma adına hazırlık yapan birini izleriz.

Yaşamını ve çalışmalarını İstanbul’da sürdüren Burak Delier’in Songs of the Possessed ismini taşıyan videosunda, işyerindeki ilişkilerin yönetiminde kullanılan bir eğitim yönteminden sahne izleriz.

Escape from Plato’s Cave
03-24.05.2019
Opening: 03.05.2019, Friday
7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Originn

Monitor, supported by Spaces of Culture, hosts Burak Delier and Avi Krispin in the first exhibition of 2019, titled Escape from Plato’s Cave. The exhibition focuses on the person disappearing in the capitalist model of production as s/he becomes a piece of the system that runs smoothly as a whole. The exhibition will be opening for audience’s visit on 3rd of May at Originn.

“The fact that ‘mask’ is the initial meaning of the word “person”, cannot be an ordinary historical coincidence. Rather, it refers to the acception of the fact that everybody plays a certain role more or less consciously anytime, anywhere… We recognize each other in these roles; we recognize ourselves in these roles.”*

Assuming that the presence of a single reflective surface determines the course of movement, is it a possibility that the person who turns into the audience of indications of her/his body can be alone with herself/himself? What is individualism? Is it what we face when there is no eye to see or no surface to reflect or is it a way of survival that we develop against the reflection together with the reflection itself?

Avi Krispin, born in Israel, works and resides in Amsterdam. In her video There Was a Time When Men Died for Honor, we watch someone driving from late at night until sunrise, stopping in front of a warehouse and preparing himself for being consistent with the role he will soon be playing. This gathering like in a fight club is a kind of therapy for group members. A group of men, who fulfill the requirements of their social roles shaped by social status and power with an expressive technique here, are in possession of themselves during the performance. The new member watches from a distance the euphoric state of the group members as a result of the performance, and yet remains behind the scene.

Burak Delier lives and works in Istanbul. In his video Songs of the Possessed, we see a scene from a training used in management of relations in an office. The artist’s work remarks that management of relations in a working area becomes more important than the production itself. The white collar workers, whose reactions change instantly, implement the best strategy they developed for themselves without being aware that they serve the ultimate aim. Although the characters that the workers play may sometimes show hostile attitude towards each other, there can be an agreement on matters of mutual interest. Erving Goffman defines this state as a type of simulation in communication excluding characters.**

Assuming that what holds a group together and directs their actions is the real aim hidden behind the ideology***, can a person retain his individual state when s/he joins a group? Escape from Plato’s Cave makes a call to free ourselves from the domination of social expectations and get outside the restricted area of freedom, and question the possibility of doing away with performance. Escape from Plato’s Cave can be visited at Originn until 24 May.

“Perdenin Arkasında”
22.12.2018, 18:00-21:00
Umurbey Mahallesi
(Darağaç)

“Savaş bütün dünyaya eziyet çektirirken, Rio de Janeiro’nun günlük gazeteleri, Bangú Kulübü’nün sahasına Londra’nın bombardımanını duyurdular.”*

Kültür için Alan tarafından desteklenen Monitor, 2018’in son sergisinde Francis Alÿs ve Ege Berensel’i “Perdenin Arkasında” başlıklı sergide bir araya getiriyor. Futbolun ilk ortaya çıktığı yıllardan bugüne siyaset ile olan yakın ilişkisine odaklanan sergi 22 Aralık Cumartesi günü Darağaç’ta ziyaret edilebilecek.

Sergiye evsahipliği yapan İzmir’in en eski yerleşim yerlerinden Umurbey Mahallesi (Darağaç), aynı zamanda kentin ilk sanayi bölgelerinden biri olma özelliğini taşıyor.

Francis Alÿs, Paradox of Praxis 5 isimli çalışmasını, 1980 sonrası neo-liberal ekonomi politikalarının etkisiyle suç oranının arttığı Meksika’nın Juarez kentinde gerçekleştirdi.

“While the war was tormenting the whole world, daily newspapers of Rio de Janeiro announced London’s bombing Bangú Club’s field.” *

Monitor, supported by Spaces of Culture, gathers together artists Francis Alÿs and Ege Berensel in the exhibition entitled “Behind the Curtain”. The exhibition focuses on the close relationship of footbal with politics since the emergence of football. The exhibition can be visited in Darağaç, İzmir on Saturday, 22nd of December.Umurbey District (Darağaç) hosting the exhibition, is one of the oldest settlements of İzmir and also one of the first industrial regions of the city. The first time football games were played in Turkey was through the end of 19th century in Bornova, İzmir. Construction of Alsancak Stadium by Panionios Football Club in early 20th century carried football to Darağaç region. In years, Darağaç became an industrial zone hosting factories and workers, and as the factories started to close down, the settlers left the region gradually.

In early years of its emergence, people were banned to play football which further developed people’s attraction. In years to follow, football was used to calm down masses owing to its challenging character. Although football became an entertainment for aristocratic class after its acceptance in Great Britain, it was not long that capitalism started to use it as an instrument to prevent the working class from seeking their rights and as a tranquilizer of the working class. Exported from Great Britain, football’s great impact on masses was used to reduce tension caused by social problems, but contrary to the capitalist system’s expectations, football’s becoming a form of resistance could not be prevented.

Ege Berensel’s research work Dinamo Mesken about a football club in a leftist district of Bursa, was supported by SALT Research Funds in 2013. The club was established in Mesken district of Bursa in 1975 and following the military coup of 12 September 1980, some executives and football players of the football club were detained, tortured and received penalties on claims of “clear attack to national values”. Settlers of the region that was kept under command, were forced to leave the region. The club still fights for its name today. In 2008, the club was re-established as Meskenspor and continues to work for disadvantaged groups and for uniting rather than discriminating people.

Francis Alÿs produced his work Paradox of Praxis 5 in Juarez, Mexico, where crime rate increased due to the impact of post-1980 neo-liberal economic politics. While Juarez is not considered to be an ideal place for development of football, the city’s football team Indios’ success brought enthusiasm and happiness to the city. Nevertheless, violence showed up here as well. In Francis Alÿs’ work dated 2013, people hiding in dark starts to appear as Alÿs drives a burning football in the streets of the city where crime and violence prevails. Alÿs moves among ruined and abandoned buildings and passes through crime scenes as siren sound mixes up with the sound of night clubs and street musicians. The fire, which is the union of controversies, becomes complicated looking from a close distance and its devastating power is added to its side that enlightens our way. It continues to move on towards the dark side of the night and city leaving sparkles behind.

The exhibition can be considered as a stand in silence for life stories of those who dare to blow the dust on all those hidden behind curtains for years, at the cost of remaining breathless. The exhibition can be visited in Darağaç on 22nd December.

Opening: 12/12/2018, 6:00 pm
Atölye 21/1

Monitor, supported by Spaces of Culture, hosts Adrian Paci and Hera Büyüktaşçıyan in the exhibition entitled “As far as I can remember I’ve always been around”.

The concept of belonging often finds itself a place in the works of both Paci and Büyüktaşçıyan. The exhibition questions the concept of belonging on the basis of moments of time, and just as Beatriz Sarlo mentions in her book Time Past about the culture of memory, focuses on the temporality of time created by narrative that transforms at each repetition.*
Born in Albania, Adrian Paci lives and works in Italy where he took asylum. His work focuses on the concepts of migration, memory and cultural identity. In his work “The Column” we witness the transoceanic journey of a piece of marble column extracted from where it belonged to. En route from the Far East to Europe, it goes under a transformation from its natural form to a hand-made piece of culture, and the transformation is not limited to that. The transformation is about the questioning of cultural identity in the period of globalization and leads the audience to reflect on saving of time. The profit to be made within the fast running time on board can be maintained by the traces visible on first sight on the bodies of workers. The horizon line is not apparent and it is not only the piece of stone that is subject to transformation in this journey. However, the change here is not as visible as the change on the marble. When time -stolen from the people who set to work day after day- returns to others in terms of time and cash, it cannot subsist where it does not belong to. Whose history does the attempt to re-display past conveyed under unauthentic conditions belong to? Time carries to future whatever is blended in past civilizations’ pattern under today’s circumstances. It becomes the hidden storyteller of a never-ending story in the geography of memory constructed layer by layer.
Hera Büyüktaşçıyan lives and works in Istanbul. Her work speaks from a surrealistic world formed through storytelling. Her work is a journey towards the lost memory, rendering the unseen visible by following the traces of past without leaving the present. In her work “On Fluid Foundations”, which she produced during the research process of her installation at L’Acquedotto Augusteo del Serino, she traces different timeframes.
Different from the aboveground, which is exposed to various interventions as becoming part of daily life, the underground lets us think about what’s underneath the ground we walk on as we go deep into it. The laundry left to dry represents a short section of lifecycle while swaying on the partly ruined wall at the background. We experience different time periods simultaneously just like the floor tiles and their reflection at the journey to the memory of the space.
“As far as I can remember I’ve always been around” presents the re-produced memory’s effort to find itself a place within the moving time. The exhibition can be visited from 12 to 19 December 2018 at Atölye 21/1.

Bir duvarın içinden konuşuyorum // I am talking from inside of a wall

“That the world is my world, shows itself in the fact that the limits of the language (the language which only I understand) mean the limits of my world.”

In the exhibition “I am Talking from Inside of a Wall” Monitor, supported by Spaces of Culture, hosts Deniz Gül from Izmir and Agnieszka Polska, born in Lublin, in Atölye 21/1, Alsancak, İzmir.

Deniz Gül adopts a poetic and experimental approach in what she produces. The dialogue that connects all her works from past to present maintains continuity in her work, “Bir Çiğdem Tarlasında Zikrini Sürerken Devam Ediyorduk Aşkımıza Öylecek”. The video starts with the whisper saying, “If you’ve fur, just run away!” and continues with appearance of a man, standing in the middle of a fallow sunflower field in his white dress. The middle-aged man repeats the whisper, then starts laughing and suddenly starts yelling; the rapid mood swing this man is through becomes explicit in moments he partly gets angry and partly gets romantic. Understanding the story he tells is not as easy as the passage of his mood ruled by his unsteady state. Maybe understanding this story would be possible if the unread words were to be read, as advised by Deniz Gül in her book Loyelow. Clearance of the mind and emergence of feelings is the way to realization of the object, according to Gül. Assuming that all sentences formed have a meaning explains how Wittgenstein’s proposition runs. When the mind is cleared and the point of perception changes direction, the analysis of non-significant elements of the sentence becomes possible paving the way for rising of voices from depth right beside us.
Polish artist Agnieszka Polska lives and works in Berlin. Her poetic language constitutes an important piece of her artistic production. Tacit connections suddenly arising between words form the basis of most of Polska’s works. If we take these connections as the concepts that we live with, according to George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, It is this system that determines how we contrive in this world. In her 2014 work “Watery Rhymes”, we come across independently floating words and expressions in a poisoning liquid. These words being little particles that move in line with rules of quantum physics, hit each other and lose their forms, and convert into a new form. The manner in which those that come side by side among many other probabilities are perceived, constitutes multiple universes. In her work “Watery Rhymes”, Polska questions the limits of the probability-based universe through the limits of language, and creates a space for the audience to think about words and what we can express by their unification.

“I am Talking from Inside of a Wall” focuses on the existence of different worlds presented by merging of words and perceived by interpretation of symbols; the exhibition can be visited until December 8th 2018 at Atölye 21/1.

Benden Sonra Tekrar Et ⎜Repeat After Me

(Please scroll down for English)

“BENDEN SONRA TEKRAR ET”
8 – 16 / 11 / 2018

Basir Mahmood, “All Voices Are Mine” isimli çalışmasında, başkalarına ait anıları aktarırken, tekrarlardan, bekleyişlerden ve her ikisinin birbirine dönüşümünden yararlanır.

Çalışmalarını ve yaşamını Londra ve İstanbul’da sürdüren Fatma Bucak’ın 2012 yılına ait çalışması “Blessed are you who come”, Türkiye – Ermenistan sınırında, eski bir kilisede geçmektedir. On ikinci yüzyıla ait bu kiliseden geriye kalanların önünde, Bucak’ın beklemelerini istediği on üç kişinin, sanatçının davranışlarına verdikleri kurgusal olmayan tepkiler, çalışmanın içeriğini oluşturur.

“REPEAT AFTER ME”
8 – 16 / 11 / 2018
Pakistan Pavilion, Kültürpark

According to Kierkegaard, repeating makes it possible to bring to future the state of reminiscence that arises as conditions necessary for envisioning past combine with elements driving one to remember. One other way is the state of waiting which, though defined as passive inactivity can be turned into an active action.

Monitor, supported by Spaces of Culture, is bringing together the works of Fatma Bucak and Basir Mahmood in “Repeat After Me” exhibition with a will to re-awake realities that turned to memories.

Basir Mahmood, born in Lahore, works and lives in Amsterdam. In his 2018 work “All Voices Are Mine,” he focuses on Lahore-centered cinema industry, which went into a great collapse in 1977. In the video he produced basing on the memories of the almost forgotten people in the sector such as the director, producer and the player, Mahmood recreates today what actually belongs to the past in Pakistan where the new wave in cinema has nearly swept away the old fashion. In the arising work of Mahmood, the set-up depending on repetitions and waiting turns into a method used to keep alive the memory of the past. The unrepeated information leads to weakened memory whereas sufficient repetition helps learning, also called as long-term memory. What is repeated becomes a part of the memory. Very little remains behind from the unrepeated information and that information tends to be forgotten. Waiting, just like repetition, creates space for thinking, if it contains an action apart from itself. Basir Mahmood in his “All Voices Are Mine,” makes use of repetition and waiting, and the two turning into each other while narrating memories belonging to others.

Fatma Bucak works and lives in London and Istanbul. Her work “Blessed are you who come” dated 2012, takes place in an ancient church on the Turkish-Armenian border. In this work, Bucak previously asks thirteen people to wait in front of the ruins of this 12th century church, and their non-fictional reactions to the artist’s behaviours constitute the content. The performance begins on a cloudy day with Bucak’s use of eggs, a metaphor which she had used in her previous works, as well. The woman in black, whom we think might have walked a long way barefoot, breaks the eggs on her body first, and then, one by one, she shares her only bread with everyone. This woman, who has just walked back to the lands that had once been deserted on foot, in spite of all loss of hopes, brings along the friendship and the sense of sharing from the past, and through the wait accompanying her repeating actions, wants to transfer them to the viewers, whom she prefers to call performers.

In both of the works that could be taken as fiction or truth, we come across the same theme: the past being carried into the present in a sense to be delivered to the future. The exhibition “Repeat After Me” built upon what repetition and waiting could teach us all, can be visited in Pakistan Pavilion in Kültürpark between 8-16 November 2018.

“Trees remember also, just like us. But they, unlike us, do not forget, they form rings on their bodies and they preserve their memories ring by ring.”*

In “Green Memory” a chapter in Eduardo Galeano’s book “Los Hijos De Los Dias” (Children of the Days: A Calender of Human History) written in his questioning identity, we see how the resistance of trees towards time and circumstances reflect upon their bodies. Does the emptiness of squares, which could be treated as one of the pieces that construct a city’s body, show the welfare level of the society that lives there, or does this emptiness point to an inertia caused by oppression? When an urban superstructure is transformed, the space that once took upon the duty of being a witness, loses its memory along with its looks.

Monitor is hosting Gülsün Karamustafa and Chto Delat in “Nothing Happened Here” exhibition, where the artist and the collective question social memory through the transformation of urban space.

Gülsün Karamustafa, one of the pioneers of contemporary Turkish art, works and lives in Istanbul. In her 2005 work “Memory of a Square”, she focuses on social events that took place in a square and what a family living close to this square has been through. The video contains documental images of Taksim Square, a place shaped by many social events throughout the years, and begins with the first flying baloon of the Ottoman Empire. This square, sometimes a place for celebrations and sometimes a space for boycott, has one aspect about it that never changes: gathering. We evaluate the impact of what’s seen behind the window, through the reactions of the family members that live by the square. Though we cannot see what they see, we are able to hear what they hear.

In their work “The Tower: A Songspiel” (2010), the latest addition to their musical trilogy that started in 2008, Chto Delat – Russian collective of authors, artists, critics and philosophers- use social events that took place in Russia. In the video, the benefits of the skyscraper that will be used as the headquarters of Gazprom- one of the biggest firms of the world- is being depicted by local politicians, company policy makers, a museum manager and a reverend. On the other corner, there are people from different parts of the society; the workers, pensioners, intellectuals, immigrants and the homeless. The skyscraper is planned to be built in St. Petersburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and because of the fact that the historic texture of the city dating back to the18th century would be harmed as a consequence of this construction, a severe conflict takes place. All legal permissions are taken for the skyscraper despite the opposition, the construction began in 2012 and once it’s completed, it is going to be the tallest building of Europe.

“Nothing Happened Here”, calls for us to take the step from what we remember to what we haven’t yet heard, through the urban memory shaped by the transformation of spaces, a medium of domination on society in use by the powerful.

The exhibition hosted by Monitor, funded by Spaces of Culture, will be held between October 26 – November 5, 2018 in Pakistan Pavillion in Kültürpark, a structure that could be identified as the social memory center of the city, since it was built in 1938 in the period when Kültürpark was Izmir Fair and remained intact until today.

Aynada Görülen Nesneler, Göründüğünden Daha Yakındır

18/10-24/11/2018

Hayy Open Space

“Aynada Görülen Nesneler, Göründüğünden Daha Yakındır”, Adorno’nun başyapıtı Minima Moralia’dan aldığı ilhamla, umutsuzluk karşısında bakış açımızı değiştirip, koşulsuz kabul ettiklerimize teslim olmak yerine, Benjamin’in kaybettiğimizi iddia ettiği biriciklik halesini geri kazanma ümidiyle, bakış açımızı dünyanın tüm çıplaklığıyla görünebildiği noktalara taşıma arzusunu taşıyor.

Objects in The Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear

18/10-24/11/2018

Hayy Open Space

As an independent initiative and art space, Hayy Open Space is opening with its first exhibition “Objects in The Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear”, curated by Monitor and in collaboration with Loading, on November 18th, 2018.

Taking contemporary art as its main focus, Hayy Open Space organizes exhibitions, performances, workshops, talks and readings concentrating on a practice of collective thinking and creating within different disciplines. Hayy’s aim is to create a space for creation, not consumption and for listening and experiencing rather than lecturing.

“The neon signs which hang over our cities and outshine the natural light of the night with their own are comets presaging the natural disaster of society, its frozen death. Yet they do not come from the sky. They are controlled from Earth. It depends upon human beings themselves whether they will extinguish these lights and awaken from a nightmare which only threatens to become actual as long as men believe in it.”*

As we can see in Benjamin’s effects on the works of Adorno, just as the aura of a work of art has been lost in the age of mechanical reproduction, humans have also lost their uniqueness on the road to becoming part of a mass society. In her work “Strike” (2010), German artist Hito Steyerl, protests television, a medium that Horkheimer and Adorno argue passes the whole world through its filter and is an important part of the culture industry. According to the Institute of Social Research in Frankfurt, television is controlled according to the mass profile that is desired by the corporations that run the world, it has created a mass society out of individuals it has standardized. The emotions and reactions that the masses feel and display, have been molded in a way that allows for complete control over them. We can look at “Strike” as not only a response to information that has been controlled and manipulated; no longer reflecting reality, the silence surrounding people who disappear in this age of visibility, to the representations of violence, victims and minorities in media, to the loss of meaning in successive content which is presented and the control over the emotions and reactions of the masses, but also as a response to eventual societal blindness and indifference.

In the 2009 work “The Recm”, Barış Eviz, an artist living in Batman, shows us a different form of protest. We are witness to the backstage of how sanctified oil is and its role in determining the future of a city through the reactions of the youth living there. A group of teenagers ranging from 14-18, protest the imperialist reality behind the media lies of how oil and its industry will bring development to Batman and how it will bring life to the educational structure, by throwing coins into an oil well situated on one of the busiest streets; making reference to the Stoning of the Devil using money; the number one symbol of Capitalism.

In the works of Adem Bulut, who lives and works in Diyarbakır, we often see criticism of the system that cannot be viewed separated from the society in which he lives. In his photo series “Keska Resulillah”, we are faced with the concept of making visible by creating a target, something we run into frequently with media. By photographing the structures marked with X’s in the Sur district of Diyarbakır, and printing them and exhibiting them in postcard dimensions, he calls for us to think about the aspects of a city that is being hidden from us rather than the usual postcard intention of highlighting the beautiful.

“Objects in The Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear”, inspired by Adorno’s masterpiece Minima Moralia, carries the hope that it can transport us to a point where we can see the world in its true color by changing our point of view even in the face of despair, by not caving in to unconditional acceptance, and the hope of us regaining the aura of uniqueness that Benjamin attests we have lost.

Forgive me, I can speak no louder
15-30/09/2018
Opening: September 15, 6:00 PM
Austro-Turk Tobacco Depot

Izmir-based non-profit contemporary art platform Monitor, will be hosting Istanbul-based video artist Ali Kazma and Slovenian art-duo Plateauresidue in its second exhibition, that will also mark the season opening. The exhibition can be seen at the Old Austro-Turk Tobacco Depot between 15-30 September.

While humanity’s survival instincts manifest themselves in a desire to change the world or even own it altogether, it faces the risk of losing itself and everything it interacts with on a very short timescale. Whether political, economic, or social in nature, the incidents that do great damage to humanity and reduce its numbers are at our doorstep, waiting for us to make a move.

“An anthropogenic age has begun, in which humans were the monarchs of the planet, blind to the price of evolution. The world seemed boundless and inexhaustible, yet although we were oblivious to it, the balance of nature was already disrupted”*

French glacialist Claude Lorius (84) was in his late 20’s when he had made up his mind to find the oldest ice and the climatic temperature in which this ice came into existence, in order to identify how climate evolved. In this adventurous journey, Lorius continues to prove human’s role in climate change, witnessing various fires, severe storms, floods, landslides and heat waves in different regions of the world proving his estimations to be true.

Alma Mater video work of the art-duo Plateauresidue, whose works are based on the struggle against passivity towards nature unbalanced due to the avaricious and negligent acts of humans, takes place in one of the few ice caves of Slovenia. The focus of the work is the ice stratum that is melting rapidly due to global warming. As members of the generation that witnessed the presence of forests with their own eyes, we are able to picture how this place, now filled with Sun rays penetrating their way through branches once was like. We then meet a character who is there to remind the ruined and ruled out nature that it is not forgotten, yet. This character, puts his red overalls on, the favorite color of super-heroes, and makes for the ice cave slowly. By making his way through the forest, where destruction and re-birth go hand in hand, with a naive sense that he could
preserve the last piece from the cave with the foam, hand-made cooler that he carries on his back. The ice particles seen on the dirt surface from time to time, reminds us of the moments when we see a few trees among residential areas and are shocked to realise that our settlements too were once forests. The thin ice layer on the rocks at the entrance of the cave, leaves us with a majestic, yet wry sense, as we continue our way into the cave. The water dripping from the stalactites several times a second, enables us to think the pace of the alternation. Right at that moment, a stalactite turned ice lens becomes a medium that we look through and we begin to see the extinction, through the window of the extinct. The anxiety caused by the melting pace of the lens feels like is always there to stay. A little world is open half-way for the piece of ice saved under the tap of the freezer.

It becomes impossible to be hopeful for future while the past is wiped away with the glacier, hiding the story of the earth, is melting away just like Angelopoulos’ archive that burnt down in the fire that broke out in Mati, Athens. What are we to expect from this winter that will come after an autumn during which we paid the price of our mistakes that destroyed the cyclic existence?

Ali Kazma’s work Safe, added by the artist to the video serial Resistance that was first shown at Turkey Pavilion of 55th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition in 2013, shows us a depot designed resistant to multiple kinds of natural disaster in order to pass vegetal diversity to next generation against the possibility of rising water as a result of a possible nuclear attack, earthquake and global warming. Can the lonely existence of islands turn them into a safeguarded place? When the mainland becomes open to disease, could the ones who should be protected, instead of being kept off be kept in isolation on an island? Do we have enough indications to protect the necessities for humans to survive from any artifactual slaughter?

This time the shelter is much bigger than the one in Alma Mater. The glaciers in Svalbard Island, between Norway and North-Pole have not disappeared yet, the Sun is still up and it is snowing. The sound of the bird or some other pole creature we hear at the beginning is accompanied by the howl of the wind. After a sharp tranquility, we are inside the space and though we do not know when they were last present there, signs of human activity are in the same space. While the silence is interrupted by the mechanic sound, we reach the depot after long and cold corridors. This image, without a spark of life holds millions of seeds that could color the whole world. The seeds that come from different regions of the world, classified in exactly the same boxes, are waiting for the end of the fallowing, hopefully to return to the soil some day. Could the probability of loss be the greatest factor that stimulates the instinct to survive?

Monitor’s “Forgive me I can speak no louder” exhibition, supported by “Spaces of Culture”, an initiation by Goethe-Institut, the Embassy of the Netherlands, the Consulate General of Sweden in Istanbul, and the Institut Francais de Turquie in cooperation with Anadolu Kültür and Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) can be visited until 30th September, 2018 Sunday at the Old Austro-Turk Tobacco Depot.

Bu bağlamda, Larsen’in “Quicksand”inde Berlin’den geldiğini söyleyen Sayid’in, Altındere’nin “Homeland” videosunda gördüğümüz Berlin’e ulaşan mültecilerden biri olabileceğini düşünmek yanlış olmayacaktır.

Without a stable space, Monitor aims to organize contemporary art oriented screenings in cooperation with present art spaces and alternative exhibition areas. Exhibiton can be visited in art studios in Kültürpark until May 28.
“For sometime now I have been convinced that it is out of this din that the life is being born which will come after us and will spell our gradual destruction, just as we have been gradually destroying what was there long before us. ”*
In a report on the website of the UN Refugee Agency, a 35-years-old mother and Libyan citizen Nisseren’s journey story was mentioned. She fled to Syria because of the war in her country but upon confronting the same catastrophy in there, she sought a chance to survive in Daraa, Jordan, Egypt and Libya. Finally, hoping her life would not follow her, she arrived in Europe in which she had thought everything would be better.
Monitor, which traces contemporary art in İzmir with visual art events in alternative areas and presents to art-lovers, at its first exhibition, focusing on lands that we assume safe and journeys on the route to them by way of asking that “what would you do if the place where you ran to survive turns into one where you ran from in the near future?” Halil Altındere and Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen, two of the most significant figures of contemporary art and are involved in many exhibitions around the world, are participant artists of the exhibition pointing out refugee and immigrant stories in Aegea and Mediterranea.
Halil Altındere, in his video, “Homeland”, first shown at the Berlin Biennale in 2016, presents moments and strivings from the life of all refugees trying to arrive in Europe from Syria with images sometimes fictional and sometimes real through the story of Muhammed Abu Hajar, a Syrian musician living in Berlin. The video begins in Syria that has been devastated by the war, passes through Aegean costs and İstanbul Basilica Cistern, then via Hungary reaches to the Berlin Hauptbahnhof and the Berlin Tempelhof Airport hosting many refugees nowadays and so it conveys a crisis that reshapes Turkey and the entire world with scenes from real life by combining fiction with reality.
Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen’s video work “Quicksand” (2017) is set in 2033. We witness a fragmented story from the point of view of Jason, a man fighting for his life in the Mediterranean Sea. The work amplifies tendencies within present-day EU. The manufacturing industry is long gone. Job security is a thing of the past and people are competing for work that is poorly paid and on a casual basis. The economy has imploded, hospitals and state schools are closing, trains rarely run. Politically, the far right has become increasingly influential, taking advantage of people’s frustrations to stoke resentment against immigrants. Throughout Europe, borders have been closed.
It is against this backdrop that Jason, a husband and father has decided to join the ever-increasing exodus. People are employing smugglers to help them leave Europe in the hope of starting a new life ‘somewhere else’. Jason’s journey ends when the boat he is in capsizes and he and many other would-be migrants are struggling to survive in the open sea. As Jason struggles in the water, his past comes to him in flashes; his life and journey revisited in fragments. Quicksand was made in collaboration with composer/sounddesigner Mikkel H. Eriksen and writer/artist Duncan Pickstock.

The “Quincunx Pattern” claimed to be present in every existent thing and continuously repeated by Thomas Browne, also manifests itself on journeys which occur in the same sea and attempt to reach a common sky by two different characters at different times, as like as in Nisseren’s life. In this context, it would not be wrong to think that Sayid, who said that he came from Berlin in Larsen’s “Quicksand”, could be one of the refugees arriving in Berlin we saw in Altındere’s “Homeland” video.
The exhibition called “There is another Sky” is opened in Art Studios in Kültürpark on May 9 and can be visited until May of 28.
During the exhibition, a series of conferences on migration and refugees routes will be conducted. One of these conferences will take place between the exhibition artist Halil Altındere and academician artist Borga Kantürk.
