MONITOR, 2018 yılında İzmir’de kurulan, kâr amacı gütmeyen bağımsız bir güncel sanat oluşumudur. 1980’lerin ortasından günümüze İzmir’de kültür ortamı, kültür politikası, kentte gerçekleştirilen güncel sanat etkinlikleri ve oluşumlarına bakılarak İzmir’de güncel sanatın geçirdiği değişim incelendikten sonra MONITOR ortaya çıkmıştır. Kuruluşundan itibaren sabit bir mekâna bağlı kalmaksızın, kullanım dışı kalmış kent mekânlarını geçici sergileme alanlarına dönüştürerek alternatif üretim ve dolaşım biçimlerine odaklanmıştır. Böylelikle hem mekân politikaları hem de sergileme pratiği aracılığıyla güncel sanatın kentle kurduğu ilişki üzerine eleştirel düşünme alanı açmayı amaçlamıştır. Odaklandığı anlatım biçimi olarak video mecrasını merkeze alan MONITOR, bu temsil biçiminin mekânla ve izleyiciyle kurduğu ilişkiyi önemser. Videonun belleği ve sürekliliği içinde barındıran yapısı kent ve kenti oluşturan unsurlarla zamanı yeniden şekillendirmesi için alan sağlar. MONITOR bu düşünsel altyapıyla 2018’den beri gerçekleştirdiği sergi, gösterim ve konuşma programıyla yerel bağlamla güçlü bir ilişki kurmayı hedeflemiştir. MONITOR bulunduğu kentle etkileşime girerek şekillendirdiği sergiler için kullanımdan düşmüş alanları sergileme mekânına dönüştürür. Gerçekleştirdiği sergi ve bu kapsamda düzenlediği konuşma programlarıyla MONITOR, İzmir’in çeşitli bölgelerinde birçok kurum ve oluşumla işbirliği yapmıştır.
MONITOR is a non-profit independent contemporary art initiative founded in İzmir in 2018. It emerged after examining the cultural environment, cultural policies, and contemporary art events and initiatives carried out in İzmir from the mid-1980s to the present, focusing on the transformation of contemporary art in the city. Since its establishment, MONITOR has focused on transforming unused urban spaces into temporary exhibition areas without being tied to a fixed venue, emphasizing alternative modes of production and circulation. In doing so, it aims to open a critical space for reflection on the relationship between contemporary art and the city through both spatial policies and exhibition practices. Centering video as its primary mode of expression, MONITOR values the relationship this medium creates with space and the audience. The nature of video, which contains memory and continuity, provides a space to reshape time in connection with the city and its constituent elements. With this intellectual foundation, MONITOR has aimed to establish a strong connection with the local context through exhibitions, screenings, and discussion programs carried out since 2018. By interacting with the city it inhabits, MONITOR transforms disused spaces into exhibition venues for the shows it organizes. Through its exhibitions and related discussion programs, MONITOR has collaborated with numerous institutions and initiatives across various districts of İzmir.
